The U.S. Departments of Education and State co-sponsored the first annual "International Education Week" in November, 2001. The second annual International Education Week will be observed November 18-22, 2002. In the first year, the sponsoring departments developed a teacher's guide to collaborative initiatives in the use of educational technology among schools and education organizations worldwide. Visit the IEW website for information about that and other resources. International Education Week resulted from a Clinton administration memorandum directing the U.S. Departments of Education and State to provide greater support for international education. Though the main emphasis of IEW is on post-secondary education, a general assertion is made that "the United States needs to ensure the its citizens develop a broad understanding of the world, proficiency in other languages, and knowledge of other cultures." The memorandum is nicely in line with the 1998 report of Wisconsin's statewide Taskforce on International Education, and with the mission of our organization. The full text of the presidential memorandum can be found at http://e.usia.gov/education/remarks/whstatement.htm. A related speech by U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley, an avid supporter of international education, can be found at http://www.ed.gov/speeches/01-2000/20000120.html. |
